Crime on the Fence" by Joy Ellis is a good star to the Detective Nikky Galena's series. DI Nikki Galena is a strong woman and a strong police detective. Her life circles around her job, and she has an almost obsession with getting rid of all the criminals she believes were responsible for her daughter never leaving the hospital and for the death of the girl who died in her arms. Now, she has been given a final warning. Nobody wants to work with her; she needs to change and make the new partnership with the new sergeant work or she is out. The sergeant is DS Joseph Easter. In this first book, she gives this new handsome sergeant a chance; his reputation is that he is too soft, but there is something about him.
They start to team up when a university student mysteriously disappears, and a series of crimes are committed in different places by people wearing horrible masks. Are those crimes related? Who is behind them? Nikky teams up with other police members and with one mafia boss who also has a missing relative and seeks Nikky's help to find her. Plenty of twists and turns. Keeps you reading until the end. I highly recommended
